Living Fäbod
The project develops Bergbodarna in Dorotea into a living mountain hut with activities that promote Swedish mountain hut culture, nature experiences and the tourism industry.
Purpose and goals
The purpose of the project is:
to investigate and test the conditions for developing the fäbod Bergbodarna into a vibrant destination and meeting place for the local community and visitors.
The goal of the project is:
to conduct a feasibility study at the fäbod Bergbodarna that includes testing activities related to Swedish fäbod culture, as well as documentation of the site's development potential, as a basis for future decisions on continued investment.
About the project
The project aims to develop Bergbodarna outside Dorotea into a living fäbod where visitors can experience, learn, and engage with Swedish fäbod culture. Through activities, guided tours, and practical elements, a meeting place is created that combines cultural heritage, nature experiences, and local development.
The fäbod culture, which was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2024, has a strong historical anchoring in the area where a large number of fäbodar have previously been in use. By activating Bergbodarna – a recently renovated fäbod environment – important steps are taken to preserve and highlight this cultural heritage.
During the summer, activities are planned for both children and adults, such as guided tours, traditional food crafts, scything, building fences, and nature educational elements. The project also creates opportunities to showcase animal husbandry on a smaller scale and convey knowledge about life at the fäbod.
The initiative contributes to strengthening Dorotea as a destination by offering a unique experience in a historical and nature-close environment. At the same time, an accessible meeting place is created for the local community and opportunities for local businesses to benefit from increased visitor flows.
The project combines the preservation of cultural environments with new activities and job opportunities, contributing to a vibrant and attractive countryside.
From the Project Application
”For visitors, the idea is to create an exciting destination that is both historically interesting, culturally enriching, and

LAG board's decision justification
The LAG board decides to prioritize the project as the feasibility study aims to
investigate the possibility of resuming small-scale, sustainable use of
Bergbodarna fäbod as part of the region's development. The feasibility study has
the potential to contribute to increased attractiveness, preservation of cultural heritage, and future
activities at the site. It is also assessed to create a basis for continued
development through collaboration, documentation, and collection of experiences.
