Blomsterlotta's garden in Ammarnäs – development of a unique cultural heritage
The project will further develop Blomsterlotta's garden in Ammarnäs and make its unique cultural history accessible to more. The garden and exhibition are developed while the story of Blomsterlotta and her son Alfred comes to life – both on-site and digitally.
Purpose and goals
The purpose of the project is:
to preserve and develop Blomsterlotta's garden as a cultural-historical visitor destination and meeting place for residents and visitors.
The goal of the project is:
to create an accessible visitor destination with an improved visitor environment, a complemented exhibition, and a digital platform that makes the site's history accessible.
About the project
Already in the 1920s, Blomsterlotta began creating her garden in Ammarnäs. Despite the mountain-adjacent climate, she developed, with great curiosity and pioneering spirit, a diverse flower garden that eventually became a well-known visitor destination. Together with her son Alfred, whose great interest in languages created contacts all over the world, the story of the cultivation spread far beyond Ammarnäs.
Today, the memory is cared for through a restored flower garden and exhibition. The project will take the next step by developing the garden environment, improving signage and exhibition, and highlighting Alfred's story as well. Among other things, a copy of the study hut he built as a child to pursue his great interest in languages is planned.
The digital story will also be developed through a new website where images, films, and documentation make the history accessible to people far beyond Ammarnäs.
Through collaboration with local businesses and actors, the initiative will simultaneously strengthen Blomsterlotta's garden as a visitor destination and preserve a unique piece of local cultural history for the future.
From the Project Application
”Through her intuitive knowledge, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, along with her eldest son Alfred, whose equally unique self-taught language ability contributed to international contacts around the world, as well as an influx of new species to try in this very special environment, Blomsterlotta became a pioneer who would have great significance for the continued mountain and nature-based cultivation.”
