Aejlie's Indigenous Residence – Sápmi Salasta

The project aims to develop a permanent global artistic residency for indigenous peoples at Aejlies in Tärnaby. This means that parts of an existing property, previously used by the Sami School in Tärnaby, will be adapted to a creative environment for residency participants and a ”safe space” for indigenous artists.

Purpose and goals

The purpose of the project is to:
create safe spaces for indigenous peoples where they are given the opportunity to develop their art and culture.
The goal of the project is to:
renovate the residency house and invite two established artists to conduct residencies for indigenous artists.

About the project

The project aims to develop a permanent global artistic residency for indigenous peoples at Aejlies in Tärnaby. This means that parts of an existing property, previously used by the Sami School in Tärnaby, will be adapted to a creative environment for residency participants and a ”safe space” for indigenous artists.

Two residency artists will participate in the practical development work together with the project manager and other staff at Aejlies. The project manager also has the task of securing national and international funding to establish a permanent operation under the umbrella name Sápmi Salasta (Sápmi embraces).

The residency will offer indigenous artists the opportunity to apply to participate in the program and work on-site in Tärnaby for a period. The artists will have access to accommodation, an inspiring work environment, and remuneration. This unique residency in a Sami context gives the artists the opportunity to benefit from Aejlies' expertise, network, and infrastructure.

Aejlies, which is a unique institution in Sweden owned and operated by Sami, creates through Sápmi Salasta a completely unique residency program in Sweden, which offers an invaluable place for creation and cultural exchange for indigenous artists.

From the Project Application

”Aejlies constitutes an important node in Sápmi in the Sami cultural infrastructure that creates conditions for Sami culture to develop.”
