Bärens Hus from a cultural perspective
Berries have been an important resource for people in the inland of Norrbotten and Västerbotten throughout history, but there has been a lack of information and knowledge about this part of history. The project aims to increase knowledge about the historical and cultural significance of berries in order to create interest and knowledge about how to utilize and process berries in a better way.
About the project
In 2015, Bärens Hus non-profit association conducted a feasibility study where they visited nearby museums to hear their views on the project and the need for a Bärens Hus. All were positive about the idea, and it emerged that the history of berries is a blank spot in the cultural offerings. The work on the feasibility study convinced the association that a Bärens Hus is needed.
The project aims to create a new destination, namely a Bärens Hus. Here there will be an exhibition that addresses the historical and cultural significance of berries. There will also be a website linked to the exhibition where information about the history and culture of berries will be disseminated. A collaboration platform with other destinations in the area will also be created to benefit the tourism industry throughout the region. In addition, there will be a modern berry processing operation, Glommersbär, in connection with the exhibition.
The material for the exhibition will be sourced from the Agricultural Society's archives, the museums in the area, and from local and village associations. This may include films, photos, and other materials that describe berry picking and berry processing. The construction of Bärens Hus will be planned and led by Norrbotten Museum in close collaboration with Bärens Hus non-profit association.
The reason Bärens Hus is being built in Glommersträsk is due to the strong tradition of berries and berry picking that exists there. During the 20th century, there were three berry drying facilities in the vicinity, and now the circle is complete with Glommersbär starting right in the village. A Bärens Hus thus becomes a step forward in the berry industry in Glommersträsk to showcase the history surrounding berries and the significance that berries have had for people in northern Sweden. In the long term, it is hoped that Bärens Hus will create increased employment in the region by developing more high-quality, healthy, and locally produced berry products.
From the Project Application
”We want to be able to offer visits for, for example, school classes and give them an opportunity to learn more about the history surrounding the berry industry in the area.”
