Sámi Viste
In order not to lose one of the cultural heritages that exist in Åsele, we see a need to further strengthen the Sámi cultural heritage by building a kåta that can be used for educational purposes.
About the project
The project has its background in that Åsele has a long history as a Sámi winter dwelling, where the Sámi moved to provide the reindeer with good grazing during the winter. Today, the municipality is a Sámi administrative area focused on supporting children in cultural heritage and identity as well as supporting national minority languages, especially Sámi.
It is important that we get to share the knowledge from the inhabitants and their stories about Sámi life in the past, both for the younger and older generations. It is an acknowledgment of the significant Sámi cultural heritage. Many older residents have a Sámi background from which we can all learn. Storytelling is a tradition where people gather around a fire and listen to tales of Sámi adventures. The older generation can contribute stories about the reindeer herding season, hunting and fishing, handicrafts, and Sámi everyday life in general, and how it looked back then.
From the Project Application
”Opportunities to gain knowledge from the community's inhabitants through stories about life in the past from a Sámi perspective feel important for both the younger generation and the older generation.”
